Baldwin County Humane Society Day

WHEREAS, Alabama, a state of animal advocates, is proud to honor the Baldwin County Humane Society as it celebrates 32 years; and

WHEREAS, the Baldwin County Humane Society was incorporated as a 501(C)3 non-profit on July 16, 1979 by Maria Gwynn, Janice Phillips, Catherine Downey Richter, Leon Johnson, Alisa Valentim, Melanie Beiser, Joan George and Nancy Humphrey; and

WHEREAS, as the county’s first animal advocacy group, the Baldwin County Humane Society provided the area’s primary shelter and voice for animals; and

WHEREAS, the Baldwin County Humane Society’s mission is to rescue homeless dogs and cats, and to alleviate pet over-population through the distribution of discounted spay/neuter vouchers, through their office, online and at shelters county-wide; and

WHEREAS, the Baldwin County Humane Society provides vital services to animals and people alike, through sheltering and adopting animals, reporting animal cruelty and neglect, sharing animals through pet-assisted therapy and rescuing animals in emergency situations; and

WHEREAS, since 1993, the Baldwin County Humane Society has conducted nursing home visits as part of their Pawsitive Therapy Program; and

WHEREAS, the Baldwin County Humane Society conducted a major rescue effort for animals harmed or left homeless by Hurricane Katrina, placing pets in foster homes and providing free supplies; and

WHEREAS, since 2007, the Baldwin County Humane Society has collaborated with other rescue groups to transport dogs saved from high-rate kill shelters to exceptional homes, and in 2010 the milestone of transporting 100 dogs to loving environments was achieved; and

WHEREAS, in May 2010, the Baldwin County Humane Society joined community food banks to establish the first ever pet food pantry in their region, donating more than 16 tons of pet food in less than a year; and

WHEREAS, for 32 years, the Baldwin County Humane Society has been a great friend to animals and the Alabamians who care about them, striving to do the greatest good, given limited resources, to help the greatest number of animals:

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Robert Bentley, Governor of Alabama, do hereby proclaim April 20, 2011, as

Baldwin County Humane Society Day

in the State of Alabama.
