Civitan Awareness Month
WHEREAS, on March 17, 1917, a group of businessmen set out to form one of the most active volunteer civic organizations in the United States; and
WHEREAS, Civitan International has now grown to more than 40,000 members in 30 countries, including youth and college programs; and
WHEREAS, on October 1, 2005, the Heartland Civitan District was formed with 42 Civitan clubs, and now has grown to 44 active Civitan clubs, 22 Junior Civitan clubs and two Campus Civitan Clubs; and
WHEREAS, the mission of Civitan Worldwide is to build good citizenship by providing a volunteer organization of clubs dedicated to serving individual and community needs with an emphasis on helping people with developmental disabilities; and
WHEREAS, Civitan’s purpose is to serve the community by fulfilling human needs not met by other organizations or individual efforts; and
WHEREAS, Civitans continually seek experiences that provide life direction, character building, leadership development and the satisfaction of helping those in need:
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Robert Bentley, Governor of Alabama, do hereby proclaim the month of April, 2011, as
Civitan Awareness Month
in the State of Alabama and encourage all citizens to recognize and celebrate the contributions and dedication of these volunteer citizens, whose efforts promote the values of helping those in need around the world. May the observance of Civitan Awareness Month appropriately commemorate the historical significance of volunteer service to the Alabama community and express gratitude to those who give so much to their fellow citizens.
