Year of Our Lord Day at Jacksonville State University

WHEREAS, as part of an ongoing service initiative, the Elite Honors Scholars of Jacksonville State University’s Honors Program have found inspiration and embraced values depicted in the book, Year of Our Lord; and

WHEREAS, Year of Our Lord recounts the journey of Lucas McCarty, a young man born with Cerebral Palsy and raises awareness of disabilities; and

WHEREAS, the spring 2011 Honors Program Campus Service Initiative will focus on three areas: raising awareness of disabilities, raising funds for East Central Alabama United Cerebral Palsy Center and coordinating service activities to benefit East Central Alabama United Cerebral Palsy Center; and

WHEREAS, individuals with disabilities face barriers to full inclusion in American society; and

WHEREAS, public awareness of the needs of individuals with disabilities is essential to the elimination of such barriers; and

WHEREAS, assistive technology can vastly enhance the lives of individuals with disabilities, and education about these advancements is essential to raising public awareness; and

WHEREAS, the spring 2011 Honors Program Campus Service Initiative will include an exhibition that will showcase some of the available assistive technology for individuals with disabilities; and

WHEREAS, individuals with disabilities are contributing, dignified and valued residents of Alabama:

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Robert Bentley, Governor of Alabama, do hereby proclaim March 30, 2011, as

Year of Our Lord Day at Jacksonville State University

in the State of Alabama and urge all residents to support programs that enhance the dignity, inclusion and independence of persons with disabilities.
