Alabama Disability Day

WHEREAS, an estimated 7.2 million Americans have an intellectual or developmental disability; and

WHEREAS, all people with intellectual and developmental disabilities have strengths, abilities and inherent value; are equal before the law; and must be treated with dignity and respect; and

WHEREAS, people with intellectual and developmental disabilities must be able to live lives of their choosing and have a good quality of life; and

WHEREAS, people with intellectual and developmental disabilities have the same basic legal, civil and human rights as other citizens; though they may need accommodation, protection and support to enable them to exercise these rights; and

WHEREAS, all people, regardless of disability, deserve the opportunity to lead a full life in their community, where they can live, learn, work and play throughout all stages of life; though people with intellectual and developmental disabilities require varying degrees of support to reach personal goals and establish contentment in their lives; and

WHEREAS, communities must be responsive to the needs of individuals with disabilities and their families, and can be enriched by the full, active participation and contributions made by these individuals; and

WHEREAS, individuals with disabilities must have access to opportunities and the necessary supports to be included in community life, have interdependent relationships, live in homes and communities and make contributions to their families, community, state and nation:

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Robert Bentley, Governor of Alabama, do hereby proclaim April 26, 2011, as

Alabama Disability Day

in the State of Alabama and  urge that all citizens of Alabama support efforts enabling individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to live full and productive lives of inclusion in our communities.
