Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery Career Exploration Program (ASVAB CEP) Awareness Year

WHEREAS, as Alabama high school students prepare to enter the world of higher education and/or the workforce and feel in need of help and support as they approach critical career decision points in their lives, it is our responsibility to provide them with the vital information and skills they will need in determining their educational and career goals; and

WHEREAS, the career exploration and planning skills taught by the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) Career Exploration Program (CEP) will not only assist students in determining their current occupational interests, post-high school personal goals and associated career goals, but it will also empower the students to make future, informed decisions in other areas of their lives; and

WHEREAS, the ASVAB CEP has endeavored to support student’s career planning and help develop their decision-making skills for over 40 years by quantifying students’ strengths and weaknesses in the three broad skill areas of Verbal Skills, Math Skills, and Science and Technical Skills thus enabling realistic, informed career exploration; and

WHEREAS, the ASVAB CEP is helpful to virtually all students, whether their post-high school plans include immediate employment in civilian or military occupations, or further education at a university, community college, or vocational institution; and

WHEREAS, the ASVAB CEP supports the mission of the state of Alabama’s Career/Technical Education program by providing resources and services that enable student success in life and work; and

WHEREAS, the ASVAB CEP addresses the career exploration needs of 21st century high school students by incorporating relevant occupational information from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Information Network into the program; and

WHEREAS, the content of the ASVAB CEP and supporting materials were developed to help schools meet the National Standards for School Counseling Programs as set forth by the American School Counselors Association and the Career Development Competencies established by the National Career Development Association; and

WHEREAS, the ASVAB CEP has been critically acclaimed nationally as a valid career-planning instrument and is offered to students and schools at no cost:

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Robert Bentley, Governor of Alabama, do hereby proclaim the 2011-2012 school year as

Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery Career Exploration Program (ASVAB CEP) Awareness Year

in the State of Alabama.
