Dog River Scenic Blueway

WHEREAS, the Dog River waterway is a precious resource, providing significant environmental, recreational and economic benefits to residents; and

WHEREAS, citizens and visitors desire safe, diverse trails, such as those found in and around the waters of Dog River, where they can enjoy historic, natural and scenic wonders; and

WHEREAS, government entities have the responsibility to improve the quality of life for their constituents and the authority to establish recreation and personal fitness facilities; and

WHEREAS, the National Park Service – Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance Program is helping communities to establish connectivity to the Southeast Coast Paddling Trail, as part of the nationwide Blueway network, of which Dog River Scenic Blueway is included; and

WHEREAS, the Dog River Scenic Blueway connects into the nationwide network of blueways from across Mobile Bay to the Southeast Coast Saltwater Paddling Trail; and

WHEREAS, a unified, non-motorized trail system, including both land-based and water-based trails, promotes healthy lifestyles, environmental consciousness, community building and an improved quality of life for people of all ages; and

WHEREAS, millions of citizens experience the joys of paddling through the Golf Coast year round; and

WHEREAS, the Dog River Scenic Blueway has the potential to attract thousands of paddlers each year from all 50 states and from across the globe, providing economic, health and scenic benefits to citizens of Alabama and the world; and

WHEREAS, paddling activities and attractions have great potential to have a positive impact on Alabama’s economy and tourism industry and to stimulate economic development by making the state attractive to businesses and citizens who enjoy the outdoors and healthy lifestyles; and

WHEREAS, National Trail Day recognizes the essential role of healthy trails in the lives of healthy people:

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Robert Bentley, Governor of Alabama, do hereby proclaim April 16, 2011, as the official designation of the

Dog River Scenic Blueway

in the State of Alabama.
