Girl Scout Advocacy Day

WHEREAS, Troop 1912, named for the year of the founding of Girl Scouts, is a bipartisan delegation of male and female state constitutional officers and members of the Alabama Legislature, established by Girl Scouts of North-Central Alabama and Girl Scouts of Southern Alabama councils to educate our great state’s leaders about issues affecting girls and young women; and

WHEREAS, Girl Scouting has for almost 100 years instilled in girls the importance of having an active voice in government through knowledge, advocacy and participation; and

WHEREAS, Girl Scouts are dedicated to inspiring girls and young women with the highest ideals of character, conduct, and service to others so that they may become model citizens in their communities; and

WHEREAS, Girl Scouts can lend expertise to policymakers, combating a host of related and overlooked issues that affect girls’ healthy living including:  relational aggression and bullying, cyber-bullying, healthy media images and eating disorders; and

WHEREAS, Girl Scouts are committed to promoting girls’ physical, social and emotional health; increasing girls’ involvement in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM); building girls’ leadership skills; and increasing girls’ financial literacy; and

WHEREAS, through the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, girls ages 5-17 discover themselves and their values, connect with other girls, and take action to make the world a better place; and

WHEREAS, Girl Scouts of North-Central Alabama and Girl Scouts of Southern Alabama  have more than 30,000 girl and adult members statewide and 450,000 alumnae, and their parent organization is one of the preeminent organizations in the United States, committed to assisting girls in developing courage, confidence and character; and

WHEREAS, by fostering in girls and young women the qualities on which the strength of the United States depends, the Girl Scouts, for more than 99 years, have significantly contributed to the advancement of the United States:

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Robert Bentley, Governor of Alabama, do hereby proclaim April 28, 2011, as

Girl Scout Advocacy Day

in the State of Alabama and applaud the commitment Girl Scouting has made to support the leadership development of Alabama’s girls and young women.
