Great Outdoors Month

WHEREAS, Great Outdoors Month is an opportunity to celebrate and experience America’s splendor and renew our commitment to conserve our air, water and land; and

WHEREAS, the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources manages and operates 22 state parks, 23 state fishing lakes, 47 reservoirs, 122 public boat ramp facilities, the most successful inshore/offshore fishing reefs program in the nation and 2 birding trails; and

WHEREAS, Alabamians are enjoying our state’s magnificent scenery and the healthy benefits of outdoor recreation; and

WHEREAS, the citizens of Alabama play an important role in protecting our natural resources by volunteering throughout the state and nation for environmental education programs, local parks and nature conservancies; and

WHEREAS, the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources facilitates many educational programs including: Alabama’s Forever Wild, Alabama Outdoor Classroom, National Archery in the Schools, Step Outside, Becoming an Outdoors Woman, Project Wild and Project WET Workshops for teachers, Naturalist Programs at State Parks, 2 Wehle Nature Centers and 5 Rivers-Alabama’s Delta Resource Center, Wildlife Art and Photo Contests, and Hooked on Fishing – Not on Drugs:

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Robert Bentley, Governor of Alabama, do hereby proclaim June 2010, as

Great Outdoors Month

in the State of Alabama.
