Physical Fitness and Sports Month

WHEREAS, many residents of Alabama would improve the quality of their lives through proper exercise and diet; and

WHEREAS, obesity-related diseases cost the United States economy more than $139 billion every year; and

WHEREAS, physical activity reduces risk, at all ages, of heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes; and

WHEREAS, fewer than one third of individuals aged six through 17 participate in vigorous physical activity on a regular basis; and

WHEREAS, physical activity is necessary to support normal growth in children and is essential to the continuing health and well-being of youth and adults; and

WHEREAS, over 70 million children and youth in the United States have the potential to acquire the knowledge, skills and values that can lead to a lifetime of physically active and healthy living; and

WHEREAS, the goal of Let’s Move in School is to ensure that every school provides a comprehensive, school physical activity program with quality physical education as the foundation so that youth will develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to be physically active for a lifetime; and

WHEREAS, the month of May has traditionally been recognized as National Physical Fitness and Sports Month to encourage broader promotion of physical fitness activities and programs in schools, parks, recreation departments, employee associations, hospitals and other entities involved in physical fitness:

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Robert Bentley, Governor of Alabama, do hereby proclaim the month of May, as

Physical Fitness and Sports Month

in the State of Alabama and encourage all citizens to get involved with Let’s Move in School campaign to promote quality physical education programs in our schools.
