VIA Moves Montgomery Day
WHEREAS, Volunteers In Action (VIA) is the volunteer youth program of the Volunteer and Information Center and HandsOn River Region; and
WHEREAS, it is VIA’s hope that every child should have a healthy childhood to ensure a healthy adulthood; and
WHEREAS, since January 25, 2011, VIA volunteers have worked with fifth graders from W.R. Harrison Elementary in a semester-long, service-learning initiative called VIA Moves Montgomery; and
WHEREAS, VIA Moves Montgomery is a holistic health program designed to fight childhood obesity and encourage a healthy lifestyle, which includes lessons on anger management, bullying, nutrition and physical activity; and
WHEREAS, on April 16, in recognition of Global Youth Service Day, the VIA Youth Council will host their 2nd Annual Sports Day to benefit Harrison Elementary students, family members and friends; and
WHEREAS, Sports Day provides an opportunity for the VIA Moves participants to demonstrate the skills and knowledge acquired through the program:
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Robert Bentley, Governor of Alabama, do hereby proclaim April 16, 2011, as
VIA Moves Montgomery Day
in the State of Alabama.
