Men’s Health Week

WHEREAS, despite advances in medical technology and research, men continue to live an average of almost six years less than women, with African American men having the lowest life expectancy; and

WHEREAS, educating the public and health care providers about the importance of a healthy lifestyle and early detection of men’s health problems will result in reducing mortality rates from disease; and

WHEREAS, men can be safer, stronger, and healthier by taking daily steps and getting care when needed; and

WHEREAS, improving men’s health is not limited to the doctor’s office or hospital; it starts at home with individuals and families taking steps to live safer and healthier lives; and

WHEREAS, men who are educated about the value of preventative health and who have positive health attitudes will be more likely to participate in health screening; and

WHEREAS, in Alabama, Men’s Health Week will focus on a broad range of men’s health issues including heart disease; diabetes; prostate, testicular and colon cancer; and

WHEREAS, Alabamians are encouraged to increase awareness of the importance of a healthy lifestyle, regular exercise and medical check-ups:

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Robert Bentley, Governor of Alabama, do hereby proclaim June 13 through June 19, 2011, as

Men’s Health Week

in the state of the Alabama.
