National Trails Day

WHEREAS, National Trails Day promotes awareness and enjoyment of recreational trails throughout the United States; and

WHEREAS, twenty-one Alabama trails are being designated National Recognition Trails by U.S. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, making Alabama the state with the highest number of trails for the second year in a row; and 

WHEREAS, the trails receiving this honor are located in Chewacla, Desoto, Florala, Lake Guntersville, Lake Lurleen and Wind Creek state parks and the communities of Athens, Citronelle, Daphne, Dothan, Eufaula, Foley, Guntersville, Jacksonville, McCalla, Montevallo, Piedmont, Talladega, Tuscaloosa and Valley; and

WHEREAS, Alabama’s multitude of trails reflect our diverse landscape of mountains, hills, beaches, flatlands, wetlands, rivers and streams; and

WHEREAS, outdoor trails throughout Alabama promote physical fitness and healthy lifestyles, enhance the quality of life and inspire community pride; and

WHEREAS, Alabama’s excellent network of recreational trails are second to none in the nation and attract many visitors to our state, boosting tourism and strengthening local economies:

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Robert Bentley, Governor of Alabama, do hereby proclaim Saturday, June 4, 2011, as

National Trails Day

in the state of the Alabama, and I encourage residents of all ages to observe this day by enjoying our rich and extraordinary outdoor heritage.
