The 24th Annual Alabama Coastal Cleanup

WHEREAS, Alabama Coastal Cleanup encompasses the cleanup of over 300 miles of beach front, bays, coastal waterways, state and federal highways, county roads, bridges, causeways and coastal areas; and

WHEREAS, as the largest one day, volunteer event in the state promoting clean oceans and waterways, Alabama Coastal Cleanup is comprised of 33 Zone Captains from Dauphin Island to the Alabama/Florida Line, approximately 5,000 volunteers, and local and statewide businesses; and

WHEREAS, over the past 23 years, 61,513 volunteers have participated in the Alabama Coastal Cleanup, 3,917 miles of coastline have been cleaned, and 1,169,844 pounds of litter and debris have been removed; and

WHEREAS, Alabama Coastal Cleanup is the only coastal cleanup in the South in which all materials and supplies are furnished to all volunteers through corporate funding; and

WHEREAS, materials provided to volunteers include large trash bags, Alabama Coastal Cleanup t-shirts, Alabama Coastal Cleanup posters, water, recycling bins for each Zone, data cars and all other pertinent supplies; and

WHEREAS, the 24th Annual Alabama Coastal Cleanup, coordinated by Alabama People Against a Littered State (PALS) and the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Coastal Section, takes place on the third Saturday in September:

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Robert Bentley, Governor of Alabama, do hereby proclaim September 17, 2011, as

in the state of the Alabama.
