Better Hearing and Speech Month

WHEREAS, according to the American Speech Language Hearing Association, an estimated 42 million Americans, or one in ten families, have some type of communication disorder, with economic costs exceeding $30 billion due to lost work, productivity, special education and medical treatment; and

WHEREAS, those citizens of Alabama who have overcome their communication disabilities through the services of dedicated audiologists and speech-language pathologists should be recognized; and

WHEREAS, Alabama also recognizes and values the efforts of all audiologists and speech-language pathologists throughout our nation who work to help these individuals with communication disorders to lead independent, productive and fulfilling lives; and

WHEREAS, audiologists and speech-language pathologists in Alabama annually observe and celebrate Better Hearing and Speech Month during the month of May:

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Robert Bentley, Governor of Alabama, do hereby proclaim May 2011, as

Better Hearing and Speech Month

in the State of the Alabama, and encourage all citizens to recognize the achievements of audiologists and speech-language pathologists in improving the quality of life for people with communication disorders.
