Children’s Vision and Learning Month

WHEREAS, research shows that vision disorders are the number one handicapping condition of children; and

WHEREAS, as many as one in four school age children have vision problems that can interfere with learning; and

WHEREAS, 18 million children will not have an eye examination by an eye doctor by the time they enter school; and

WHEREAS, undiagnosed and untreated vision-related learning problems are significant contributors to early reading difficulties and can lead to special education classification; and

WHEREAS, all children deserve the opportunity to learn and to achieve their full potential; and

WHEREAS, the State of Alabama recognizes the importance of education in the lives of its children, and encourages parents to have their children screened for vision problems in order to maximize their potential in the classroom:

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Robert Bentley, Governor of Alabama, do hereby proclaim August 2011, as

Children’s Vision and Learning Month

in the State of the Alabama.
