Farmers Market Day

WHEREAS, consumer awareness of the importance of fresh fruits and vegetables in the diet and increasing transportation costs are creating a renewed interest in purchasing food directly from the grower through farmers markets; and

WHEREAS, there are 135 farmers markets and 138 farm stands in Alabama, where consumers have access to the freshest food available and the opportunity to explore their senses in the agricultural marketplace; and

WHEREAS, fruits and vegetables found at farmers markets are usually sold within 24 hours of being harvested, making them fresher than produce that has been shipped for long periods; and

 WHEREAS, when eaten at the height of ripeness, one reaps the benefits of the exceptional flavor and nutrients of produce; and

WHEREAS, the ability to see, touch and smell the freshness of fruits and vegetables grown locally on a farm creates an inviting atmosphere, making farmers markets a popular attraction in cities and towns across America; and

WHEREAS, Alabama’s farmers markets are a state treasure, providing economic and health benefits to both farmers and consumers; and

WHEREAS, Charles McIntyre Johnson was instrumental in establishing Farmers Market Day, a day to honor Alabama farmers and their finest, homegrown produce:

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Robert Bentley, Governor of Alabama, do hereby proclaim July 9, 2011, as

Farmers Market Day

in the State of the Alabama.
