Governor Bentley Calls Special Election for Two House Districts

MONTGOMERY – Governor Robert Bentley today called for a Special Election to fill the vacant seats of State House of Representatives Districts 45 and 48. House District 45 was previously held by State Representative Owen Drake who died last month. House District 48 is being vacated by Representative Greg Canfield who was appointed by Governor Bentley last week to serve as Director of the Alabama Development Office.

The Special Primary Election for both House Districts will be held on Tuesday, August 30, 2011. If a runoff is necessary, it will be held on October 11, 2011, with a General Election date set for Tuesday, November 29, 2011. If no Runoff Election is necessary, the Special General Election will be held October 11, 2011.

“Owen Drake and Greg Canfield were excellent representatives of their respective House Districts.  It is important that the citizens of Jefferson, Shelby and St. Clair Counties to have full representation in Montgomery by filling the vacancies created as quickly as possible,” said Governor Robert Bentley.  “I am confident that another well qualified representative will be elected to serve the people of these two important House Districts.”

Candidates have until 5:00 p.m. on Friday, July 15, 2011 to qualify with their respective political parties for the election.
