Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

WHEREAS, according to the American Cancer Society, there will be an estimated 240,890 new cases of prostate cancer nationally in the year 2011, and there will be an estimated 33,720 deaths from prostate cancer in this same year; and

WHEREAS, the American Cancer Society estimates there will be 3,680 new cases of prostate cancer this year in our state, which will result in an estimated 710 deaths; and

WHEREAS, about 25 percent of prostate cancer occurs in men under the age of 65, during their prime years at work; and

WHEREAS, prostate cancer leaves too many parents, women, children and other family members without a man they love; and

WHEREAS, prostate cancer has accounted, on average, for 15 percent of the nation’s cancer burden and 15 percent of male cancer deaths; and

WHEREAS, on average, prostate cancer receives only about 5 percent of the funds this nation commits to cancer research; and

WHEREAS, increased awareness and use of early detection practices by men is essential to controlling prostate cancer:

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Robert Bentley, Governor of Alabama, do hereby proclaim September 2011, as

Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

in the State of the Alabama.
