Legislative Spouses Make Donation to Governor’s Emergency Relief Fund

MONTGOMERY– First Lady Dianne Bentley has accepted a ten thousand dollar donation to the Governor’s Emergency Relief Fund from the Alabama Legislative Club. Mrs. Bentley is a former member of the Alabama Legislative Club, which is comprised of spouses of Alabama Legislators.

After the April tornadoes, The Alabama Legislative Club wanted to help their fellow Alabamians recover from the tornadoes. After witnessing the destruction first-hand, the wives reached out into their communities and raised money to help tornado survivors recover and rebuild their lives.

“When the tornadoes hit in April, people all over the state suffered,” said First Lady Dianne Bentley. “Recovery is a long road and so many people of this state have proven that they are in it for the long haul. That is why I am so thankful to the Alabama Legislative Club for their generous donation to the Governor’s Recovery Relief Fund. This fund will go toward the long term needs of the recovery process. Not only will the wives provide monetary aid, but they will also donate their time to community service projects. I look forward to joining them in their recovery efforts all across the state.”

Maudie Darby Bedford, President of the Alabama Legislative Club and wife of State Senator Roger Bedford said, “Alabamians are strong and resilient and we love each other and this is a way we can help those in need. It will take years for us to heal from this devastation, but together we can help heal the wounds, slowly and steadily. We need to continue to pray for those that are hurting daily and support them not only in the moment but for years to come."

The Governor’s Emergency Relief Fund is designed to provide assistance to individuals and organizations with recovery costs that are a direct result of a disaster or emergency. The fund operates on a year-round basis to help residents of Alabama (current residents and evacuees), local businesses and organizations who have exhausted all other avenues of relief.

The Alabama Legislative Club will hold community service projects for future donations to the fund.
