Beef Month

WHEREAS, the beef cattle business in Alabama is one of the state’s largest agricultural industries, representing a $3 billion business; and

WHEREAS, cash receipts from the sale of cattle and calves in 2010 reached $400 million, which ranks second behind broilers among Alabama farm commodities; and

WHEREAS, Alabama’s 21,415 farms with cattle ranks 9th in the United States, and on January 1, 2011 these farms had a total of 1.23 million head of cattle and calves; and

WHEREAS, the total value of cattle on Alabama farms last year was $857 million, with a $680 value per head; and

WHEREAS, beef is a delicious, nutritious meat containing quantities of zinc, iron, protein, vitamins and minerals with the 2011 slogan "You Gotta Love Lean Beef. 29 Lean Cuts, One Powerful Protein;" and

WHEREAS, the beef industry is working hard to "put a face" on the beef producer where 96% of all cattle come from family farms; and

WHEREAS, the 11,286 members of the Alabama Cattlemen’s Association, encourage the people of Alabama to join with them in serving beef during October; and

WHEREAS, October has traditionally been proclaimed Beef Month for forty seven years since 1964:

    

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Robert Bentley, Governor of Alabama, do hereby proclaim October 2011, as

Beef Month

in the State of Alabama, and I urge all Alabamians to support the beef cattle industry and join with cattle producers in saluting this important business.
