The 50th Anniversary of The United States Peace Corps

WHEREAS, inspired an instituted by President John F. Kennedy, the United States Peace Corps has for five decades served as a beacon of leadership in the promotion of peace and prosperity throughout the world; and

WHEREAS, throughout its history, the Peace Corps and its nearly 200,000 volunteers have made substantial contributions to the lives of countless individuals in 139 countries; assisting in the improvement of education, health, agriculture, environmental science, and community development, among many other disciplines; and

WHEREAS, the Peace Corps and its volunteers are to be commended for their outstanding service to the United States and the world at large; and

WHEREAS, it is important to support the agency’s mission and legacy of service by honoring our past, demonstrating our effectiveness, and inspiring the next generation of volunteers through education and engagement; and

WHEREAS, in commemoration of the Peace Corps’ 50th anniversary, citizens across North Alabama will plant trees to honor the organization’s mission of  promoting peace and friendship around the world; and

WHEREAS, it is important to support the agency’s mission and legacy of service by honoring our past, demonstrating our effectiveness, and inspiring the next generation of volunteers through education and engagement; and

WHEREAS, 2011 marks the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Peace Corps:

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Robert Bentley, Governor of Alabama, do hereby proclaim 2011, as

The 50th Anniversary of

The United States Peace Corps

and commend the organization’s commitment to encouraging progress, creating opportunity and fostering understanding throughout the world.
