Governor Bentley Orders Flags Lowered in Memory of Civil Rights Icon Fred Shuttlesworth

MONTGOMERY— Governor Robert Bentley today ordered that all flags on state government buildings be displayed at half-staff in memory of the Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth, who died earlier today.  Rev. Shuttlesworth was instrumental in the Birmingham integration efforts in the 1950’s and 1960’s that helped spark the national civil rights movement.

“I was saddened to hear of the passing of Fred Shuttleworth this morning. He was a true pioneer for civil rights and a champion for equality among all Alabamians. Today, I ask that all Alabamians join me in honoring his memory,” said Governor Bentley. “Rev. Shuttlesworth is an Alabama treasure who positively impacted the lives of many Alabamians. Dianne and I extend our deepest sympathies to his family.”

The Governor directed that all flags remain lowered until sunset on the day of Shuttlesworth’s interment.
