Nonprofit Awareness Month

WHEREAS, Alabama’s communities are enriched and enlivened by the contributions nonprofits make to the quality of life; and

WHEREAS, more than 21,000 tax-exempt 501 (c)(3) nonprofits serve communities in all 67 counties of Alabama; and

WHEREAS, people throughout Alabama support and participate in nonprofit organizations by board leadership, volunteering, donating and working as staff; and

WHEREAS, according to the Alabama Association of Nonprofits, nonprofits provide more than 227,000 jobs in Alabama and contribute $12.4 billion to the state’s economy; and

WHEREAS, nonprofits bring Alabamians together to address pressing needs and find creative and effective solutions in their communities; and

WHEREAS, nonprofits build partnerships and collaborate with businesses, governments, faith-based organizations, and other groups to expand resources in every corner of our state; and

WHEREAS, nonprofits provide opportunities for developing skills, leadership abilities, and service through civic engagement; and

WHEREAS, nonprofits play a central role in the democratic process by educating the public about vital issues in their communities and our state and by providing a means for individuals to deliberate on and advocate for public policies and decisions that affect them; and

WHEREAS, every Alabamian benefit’s from nonprofits’ vital contributions of strengthening our social fabric, public policy, culture, sense of community, and future:

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Robert Bentley, Governor of Alabama, do hereby proclaim November 2011, as

Nonprofit Awareness Month

in the State of the Alabama and encourage all Alabamians to strengthen the bonds of community by celebrating and participating in the work of our state’s nonprofit organizations.
