Red Ribbon Campaign

WHEREAS, drug and alcohol abuse in the United States and Baldwin County prevents people from reaching their full potential at school, on the job and in their communities; and

WHEREAS, local leaders know that the support of the people in our communities is the most effective tool they can have in their efforts to reduce use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs; and

WHEREAS, success will not occur overnight, our patience and continued commitment to drug education, prevention, intervention and treatment are imperative; and

WHEREAS, the red ribbon was chosen as a symbol commemorating the work of Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, a Drug Enforcement Administration agent, who was murdered in the line of duty and has come to represent the belief that one person can make a difference; and

WHEREAS, the Red Ribbon Campaign was established by Congress in 1988 to promote this belief and encourage a drug-free lifestyle and involvement in drug prevention efforts; and

WHEREAS, the 2011 observance of Red Ribbon Campaign provides residents of the Baldwin County Girl’s Residential Wilderness Program the opportunity to demonstrate their commitment to healthy, drug-free lifestyles by wearing and displaying red ribbons:

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Robert Bentley, Governor of Alabama, do hereby proclaim October 24 through 28, 2011, as

Red Ribbon Campaign

in the State of the Alabama and encourage all citizens to participate in alcohol, tobacco and other drug prevention programs and activities, making a visible statement that we are strongly committed to a drug-free state.
