Alabama Habitat for Humanity Day

WHEREAS, Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry founded in 1976 which seeks to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the world and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action; and

WHEREAS, in October 2011, Habitat for Humanity celebrated the 500,000th house in Kenya, West Africa and then dedicated the 500,001st house the next day in New Jersey in an effort to encourage the reflection of the state, and our towns and cities regarding the basic need of adequate shelter, and to remind the world of its collective responsibility for the future of the human habitat; and

WHEREAS, Alabama Association of Habitat Affiliates was established in 1992 and there are now 34 local affiliates providing service to 46 counties in state of Alabama; and

WHEREAS, Alabama Association of Habitat Affiliates, (AAHA) is the state support organization for 34 local affiliates; and

WHEREAS, since 1992, Alabama Affiliates has built over 1990 homes in partnership with as many hardworking families in the state of Alabama; and

WHEREAS, in addition to building homes, Alabama Affiliates has provided service to hundreds of Alabama citizens with home repairs and rehabs; and

WHEREAS, the Southwest Alabama Affiliate will produce the 2000th Habitat Home in Alabama in celebration of the 20th anniversary as an Association of Habitat Affiliates; and

WHEREAS, the Athens-Limestone Affiliate will celebrate the 2001st house built in Alabama as a symbolic beginning of another 20 years of affordable housing efforts by Habitat for Humanity affiliates across the state; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting to set aside time to reflect and recognize the efforts of Habitat for Humanity in Alabama over the last 20 years and to encourage their growth and effectiveness for the future good of the state of Alabama:

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Robert Bentley, Governor of Alabama, do hereby proclaim February 27, 2012 as

Alabama Habitat for Humanity Day

in the state of Alabama and encourage all citizens to observe this day to make “Sweet Home Alabama” a reality for all of the citizens of our state.
