Alabama Organ Transplant Week

WHEREAS, there are more than 110,000 people waiting for an organ transplant and a new person is added to the waiting list every 18 minutes; and

WHEREAS, in Alabama more than 3,500 people are waiting for an organ transplant; and

WHEREAS, the UAB School of Medicine has created the new Comprehensive Transplant Institute to coordinate services and work to improve outcomes for patients through excellence in clinical care and advances in the science of transplantation; and

WHEREAS, the Comprehensive Transplant Institute will hold its inaugural symposium on February 29, 2012 titled, “New Insights into Allograft Injury: The Role of Innate Immunity in Solid Organ Transplantation;” and

WHEREAS, the UAB Kidney and Pancreas Transplant Clinic will open its new doors on March 7, 2012 to serve the more than 8,000 patients seeking treatment each year; and

WHEREAS, the American Society of Transplantation, a national organization of more than 3,000 transplant professionals dedicated to research, education, advocacy and patient care in transplantation, is holding its board meeting in Birmingham, Alabama on March 1 through March 2, 2012:

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Robert Bentley, Governor of Alabama, do hereby proclaim February 29 through March 7, 2012, as

in the state of Alabama and recognize the importance of promoting organ transplantation throughout this state and our nation.
