National Society Daughters of the American Revolution Week

WHEREAS, the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution was founded under the motto “God, Home, Country” in 1890 as a non-profit, non-political, volunteer, women’s service organization dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history and securing America’s future through better education; and

WHEREAS, the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution has over 170,000 members in 3000 chapters across the world, and the Alabama Society has over 4000 members in 71 chapters across the state; and

WHEREAS, Kate Duncan Smith DAR School in Grant, Alabama was founded in 1924, is one of six DAR schools in the country; and

WHEREAS, any woman 18 years or older, regardless of race, religion, or ethnic background, who can prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution is eligible for membership; and

WHEREAS, the Alabama Society strives to fulfill the current administration’s theme to “Preserve the Past, Enhance the Present and Invest in the Future” through youth programs, veteran and military support, and patriotic and historic preservation activities; and

WHEREAS, the Alabama Society promotes education and citizenship through youth programs such as Children of the American Revolution, DAR Good Citizens, Junior American Citizens and ROTC medals presented in colleges and high schools; and

WHEREAS, the Alabama Society supports veterans and military members in areas throughout the world, from Landstuhl Hospital in Germany, where thousands of phone cards, clothing and basic necessities were sent through DAR Project Patriot, to Iraq and Afghanistan, where boxes of provisions were sent to soldiers; and

WHEREAS, Alabama Society members support veterans and military members locally through visits and volunteer hours at Veterans Homes throughout the state and presenting awards such as Outstanding Veteran Patient of the Year; and

WHEREAS, the Alabama Society partakes in patriotic and historic preservation initiatives by promoting and supporting Constitution Week each September; presenting Community Service Awards, Conservation Awards and the Medal of Honor to outstanding citizens in Alabama;  marking historic sites and recognizing others in our state who do so and participating in naturalization ceremonies:

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Robert Bentley, Governor of Alabama, do hereby proclaim March 5 through March 8, 2012, as

National Society Daughters of the American Revolution Week

in the state of Alabama and do hereby commend this outstanding organization for its significant contributions to our state and nation.
