Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated Day

WHEREAS, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated was founded on November 12, 1922 at Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana by seven educators, and has evolved today as an international service and social organization comprised of women from every profession; and

WHEREAS, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority’s aim is to enhance the quality of life within the community through public service, leadership development and education of youth; and

WHEREAS, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated has met the challenges of the day through the implementation of its signature program, Project Reassurance, which promotes healthy choices, healthy living and healthy generations, and continues to grow through “Scholarship, Service and Sisterhood;” and

WHEREAS, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated works to further the mission of partner organizations such as Africare, March of Dimes, St. Jude’s Children Research Hospital, the Center of Disease Control, the National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy and the United Negro College Fund; and

WHEREAS, Griena H. Knight-Davis, educational administrator and social entrepreneur, who was initiated on November 4, 1995 into the Alpha Zeta Sigma Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority in Bessemer, Alabama as a graduate student at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and who currently serves as the Southeast Regional Syntaktes, will be recognized and congratulated by the members of the Southeast Region for her dedication and service to the sorority; and

 WHEREAS, the Southeast Region of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority was established at the 14th Boule of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority in December 1939 and consists of the states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, South Carolina and Tennessee, and also the United States Virgin Islands and the Bahamas; and

WHEREAS, the Southeast Region of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated will convene the 72nd Southeast Regional Conference hosted by the Chi Sigma Alumnae Chapter from April 12 through April 15, 2012 in Birmingham, Alabama, the hometown of the 2008-2012 Southeast Regional Syntaktes Griena H. Knight-Davis; and

WHEREAS, the Southeast Region of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority is “Setting the Magic City on Fire to Serve” and is extending a very special invitation to the Metro-Birmingham Community and the members of the Birmingham National Pan-Hellenic Council, Incorporated to support and participate in the service and social activities planned for this conference:

 NOW, THEREFORE, I, Robert Bentley, Governor of Alabama, do hereby proclaim the April 13, 2012 as

in the state of Alabama.
