Boeing Day

WHEREAS, The Boeing Company celebrates its 50th Anniversary in the state of Alabama on April 30, 2012; and

WHEREAS, first coming to Huntsville, Alabama in 1962 to perform work on NASA’s new Saturn V launch vehicle, The Boeing Company has seen tremendous growth and development within Alabama and across the nation; and

WHEREAS, The Boeing Company not only designed and manufactured the first stage of the Saturn S-IC and performed technical integration of the entire Saturn V launch vehicle, but they also designed and engineered the Lunar Roving Vehicle that was used by NASA to explore the surface of the moon during the Apollo moon program; and

WHEREAS, in 1972, the company won a contract from the U.S. Army Missile Command’s McMorrow Laboratories to design, develop and manage the Radio Frequency Simulation System for the Advanced Simulation Center at Redstone Arsenal, which enabled The Boeing Company to maintain a constant business presence in Huntsville throughout the 1970s and beyond; and

WHEREAS, in 1987, Boeing Huntsville was awarded a contract to develop and deploy the Alabama Supercomputer Network, which was the first supercomputer network in the nation to be funded by state government for use by business and academia; and

WHEREAS, The Boeing Company made a significant investment in a new manufacturing facility in Decatur, Alabama to manufacture and assemble Delta rockets; today, that facility is operated by United Launch Alliance, which employs over 700 workers and manufactures the Delta IV, Delta II and Atlas V rockets; and

WHEREAS, Boeing Huntsville continues to be the largest aerospace company in Alabama and one of the state’s largest employers, continuing their focus on delivering high quality products, services and solutions to its consumer base:

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Robert Bentley, Governor of Alabama, do hereby proclaim April 30, 2012 as

 Boeing Day

in the state of Alabama and commend The Boeing Company for their excellence in the field of aerospace, and on the occasion of their 50th Anniversary in the state of Alabama.
