Learning for Life Day

WHEREAS, strong educational systems and an educated workforce are critical components to attracting quality residents, higher paying jobs and business investments to any community, and directly impacting a community’s prosperity; and

WHEREAS, a quality educational system and educational programming is the primary responsibility of the local board of education and an indirect responsibility of a local business base, citizen involvement and support and to enhance the community’s quality of life; and

WHEREAS, a partnership of the Baldwin County Board of Education, local principals, Coastal Baldwin Enrichment Foundation and island cities has created the Learning For Life initiative targeted at the Gulf Shores/Orange Beach feeder pattern with goals of innovative teaching methods, establishing career tracks with “Career Academies,” increasing foreign language options with Rosetta Stone software, providing students and teachers with computers and additional teacher units, all with the desire to enhance educational opportunities, improve dropout rates, decrease absences and prepare students to be more competitive in a changing economic market; and

WHEREAS, the business communities in the Gulf Shores – Orange Beach region recognize that they are the primary consumers of the “output” of our school system – qualified, talented, knowledgeable and articulate graduates; and

WHEREAS, the business communities, through the Alabama Gulf Coast Area Chamber of Commerce and the Coastal Baldwin Educational Enrichment Foundation, have united to rally around the Learning for Life Program with not merely a one-time effort, but with deep seeded organizational commitments to the Learning for Life culture; this effort, which has been in the works for many weeks, will be formally launched with a community-wide event at Gulf Shores High School on May 4, 2012 with a showcase for the business community entitled “See For Yourself!”:

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Robert Bentley, Governor of Alabama, do hereby proclaim May 4, 2012, as

Learning for Life Day

in the state of Alabama.
