National Trails Day

WHEREAS, interest in outdoor recreational opportunities, including walking, bicycling, hiking, kayaking, horseback riding, canoeing and ORV riding is on the rise with Alabama residents and visitors; and

WHEREAS, trails in Alabama enhance the quality of life for our citizens, increase tourist activity in the state and provide alternative transportation routes for non-motorized vehicles; and

WHEREAS, National Trails Day is an opportunity to increase public awareness of Alabama’s trail opportunities and diverse outdoor recreation activities, and promote the importance of a local and national network of trails and greenways; and

WHEREAS, trail activities are enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities, and are an important part of Alabama’s outdoor recreation resources; and

WHEREAS, citizens are encouraged to participate in the Trails Day activities scheduled in Alabama and the region to strengthen their commitment to preserving the natural, scenic, and recreational qualities of Alabama trails:

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Robert Bentley, Governor of Alabama, do hereby proclaim June 2, 2012 as

National Trails Day

in the state of Alabama, and encourage citizens of all ages to observe this day by enjoying our rich and extraordinary outdoor heritage.
