Beef Month

WHEREAS, the beef cattle business in Alabama is one of the state’s largest agricultural industries, representing a $2.5 billion industry; and

 WHEREAS, cash receipts from the sale of cattle and calves in 2011 reached $395 million, which ranks second behind broilers among Alabama farm commodities; and

 WHEREAS, Alabama’s 21,415 farms with cattle ranks 9th in the United States and on January 1, 2012 these farms had a total of 1.21 million head of cattle and calves; and

 WHEREAS, the total value of cattle on Alabama farms last year was $873 million with a $710 value per head; and

 WHEREAS, beef is a delicious, nutritious meat containing quantities of zinc, iron, protein, vitamins and minerals with the known slogan “BEEF: It’s What’s For Dinner;” and

 

 WHEREAS, the beef industry is working hard to produce safe and wholesome products on our family farms across the state; and

 WHEREAS, the 11,133 members of the Alabama Cattlemen’s Association, encourage the people of Alabama to enjoy beef during the month of October; and

 WHEREAS, consumers can enjoy “Beef Day” on October 10, 2012 in Montgomery; and

 WHEREAS, October has traditionally been proclaimed Beef Month for the past 48 years since 1964:

NOW, THEREFORE, I Robert Bentley, Governor of Alabama, do hereby proclaim the month of October 2012, as

Beef Month

in the state of Alabama, and I urge all Alabamians to support the beef cattle industry and join with cattle producers in saluting this important industry.
