IV Polk Day
WHEREAS, IV Polk was born September 8, 1912 in Jay Florida; and
WHEREAS, in 1937 at the age of 24, IV POLK left Jay, Florida for Birmingham, Alabama with $50 dollars in his pocket seeking a better life for himself and his beloved wife Vela; and
WHEREAS, IV Polk began working for the Birmingham Electric Company as a Streetcar Conductor, a position he enjoyed for nine years; and
WHEREAS, as a true entrepreneur, IV Polk opened the first 24-hour BECO cafe, several drugstores, an artificial flower business and IVELA Sales INC. before retiring to build homes as a hobby; and
WHEREAS, IV Polk has been an upstanding citizen of Vestavia Hills, Alabama for 37 years and is well known for his gardening expertise; and
WHEREAS, IV Polk always spends his mornings reading and studying God’s word; and
WHEREAS, IV POLK is best known for his faith in God, loyalty to his country, devotion to his family and his love for everyone; and
WHEREAS, best wishes and congratulations are due upon the occasion of IV Polk’s 100th birthday, September 8, 2012, and on this special day, it is proper that he be recognized for his service to his state, to his family and to his community:
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Robert Bentley, Governor of Alabama, do hereby proclaim September 8, 2012, as
IV Polk Day
in the state of Alabama.
