National Case Management Week

WHEREAS, the history of case management goes back to the early 1900’s when public health nurses and social workers coordinated services throughout the public health sector; and

WHEREAS, by World War II, insurance companies began employing nurses and social workers to assist with the coordination of care for our soldiers returning from war; and

WHEREAS, by the 1990’s the number of case managers rose to more than 100,000 and the focus included cost containment and quality management issues; and

WHEREAS, case management is not a profession in itself, but an area of practice within one’s profession; and

WHEREAS, case managers are primarily nurses, social workers and other allied health professionals, such as, rehabilitation counselors and therapists; and

WHEREAS, thousands of citizens of the state of Alabama have benefitted from case managers; and

WHEREAS, the Case Management Society of America (CMSA) announces October 14 through October 15, 2012 as National Case Management Week; and

WHEREAS, Case Managers provide dedicated and compassionate care in an increasingly intense and demanding environment; and

WHEREAS, Case Managers enrich and improve the health of the residents of our great state:

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Robert Bentley, Governor of Alabama, do hereby proclaim the week of October 14 through October 20, 2012 as

National Case Management Week

in the state of Alabama, and hereby commend all persons who are committed to and work towards improving the health and wellness of Alabamians.
