Drive Safer Sunday

WHEREAS, Road Safe America was founded in 2003 to raise awareness about the need for trucks and passenger vehicles to drive more safely to save lives on American roads and highways; and

WHEREAS, Steve and Susan Owings founded Road Safe America after their son, Cullum, was killed the Sunday after Thanksgiving in 2002, when his car was crushed from behind by a speeding tractor trailer on a Virginia Highway; and

WHEREAS, more than 43,000 people are killed each year in accidents on American highways and roads; and

WHEREAS, the Sunday after Thanksgiving is the busiest highway travel day of the year; and

WHEREAS, there is no single day set aside in the U.S. for citizens to focus on driving more safely:

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Robert Bentley, Governor of Alabama, do hereby proclaim November 25, 2012 as

Drive Safer Sunday

in the state of the Alabama.
