Hypoparathyroidism Awareness Day

WHEREAS, hypoparathyroidism is a rare medical disorder that affects less 100,000 Americans, but is growing at an alarming rate due to an increase in thyroid cancer and parathyroid surgeries; and

WHEREAS, hypoparathyroidism is a serious medical condition that is debilitating and has a serious impact on the lives of those affected; and

WHEREAS, one in 4,400 Alabamians have hypoparathyroidism; and

WHEREAS, those with hypoparathyroidism experience difficulty in obtaining an accurate diagnosis, few treatment options and difficulty in obtaining insurance, along with a sense of isolation; and

WHEREAS, the mission of the Hypoparathyroidism Association is to educate the public and the medical community about hypoparathyroidism; and

WHEREAS, the Hypoparathyroidism Association, Inc., is organizing a statewide observance of Hypoparathyroidism Awareness Day on June 1, 2013, where patients, medical professionals, researchers, government officials and pharmaceutical companies can join together to focus attention on this misunderstood and misdiagnosed medical disorder:

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Robert Bentley, Governor of Alabama, do hereby proclaim June 1, 2013, as

Hypoparathyroidism Awareness Day

in the state of the Alabama.
