Governor Bentley Announces Expected Qualification Period for Special Election in 1st Congressional District

MONTGOMERY – Governor Robert Bentley on Friday announced an expected qualification period for an upcoming special election to fill Alabama’s Congressional District 1 seat.

The qualification period is based on the anticipated vacancy of the seat by Congressman Jo Bonner, who recently announced he will resign at 11:59 p.m. on August 2nd to accept a new position with the University of Alabama.

Based on this expected vacancy, Governor Bentley announced on Friday that he intends to set a qualification period of August 3rd through August 5th for the expected District 1 special election.

“I am announcing this expected qualification timeline to provide as much notice as possible for those who are interested in qualifying to run in this election,” Governor Bentley said. “While I cannot call a special election until after the vacancy becomes official, I do want to announce this qualification period so we can move forward with a special election in a timely manner. My goal is to help the people of District 1. I want to ensure that they have Congressional representation as soon as possible following this vacancy. By announcing the expected qualification period, candidates can plan accordingly, and the special election can move forward.”

Governor Bentley’s office will provide notice once the special election timeline for the District 1 seat is established.
