Amended Special Election Timelines Announced for House Districts 104 and 74

MONTGOMERY – Governor Robert Bentley on Friday issued amended special election proclamations, updating the formal timelines for elections to fill the District 104 and District 74 seats in the Alabama House of Representatives.

The District 104 seat was previously held by Representative Jim Barton, who announced his resignation on Wednesday. The District 74 seat was previously held by Representative Jay Love, who resigned from the seat effective August 1.

The amended special election timeline for House District 104 in Mobile County is as follows:

A Special Primary Election will be held on Tuesday, October 15, 2013. Or, in the event that a Special Primary Election is not necessary, a Special General Election will be held on Tuesday, December 10, 2013.

If necessary because of one candidate not receiving a majority of the votes in the Special Primary Election, a Special Primary Runoff Election will be held on Tuesday, December 3, 2013.

If a Special Primary Runoff Election is not necessary, a Special General Election will be held on Tuesday, December 10, 2013.

If a Special Primary Runoff Election is required, the Special General Election will be held on Tuesday, January 28, 2014.

Candidates qualifying with major political parties must do so by Monday, August 26, 2013, at 5:00 p.m. The two major political parties are to certify their qualified candidates to the Secretary of State as soon as possible after the qualification deadline but by no later than 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 27, 2013.

All third-party candidates, independent candidates, and/or minor party candidates seeking ballot access are advised that their deadline for filing the appropriate notification, petitions, or supporting paperwork with the Secretary of State is Tuesday, October 15, 2013, at 5:00 p.m.

The amended timeline for House District 74 in Montgomery County updates the third party filing deadline for this special election. The full timeline is as follows:

A Special Primary Election will be held on Tuesday, October 8, 2013. Or, in the event that a Special Primary Election is not necessary, a Special General Election will be held on Tuesday, December 3, 2013.

If necessary because of one candidate not receiving a majority of the votes in the Special Primary Election, a Special Primary Runoff Election will be held on Tuesday, November 19, 2013.

If a Special Primary Runoff Election is not necessary, a Special General Election will be held on Tuesday, December 3, 2013.

If a Special Primary Runoff Election is required, a Special General Election will be held on Tuesday, January 14, 2014.

Candidates qualifying with major political parties must do so by Monday, August 19, 2013, at 5:00 p.m. The two major political parties are to certify their qualified candidates to the Secretary of State as soon as possible after the qualification deadline but by no later than 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 20, 2013.
