Autism Awareness Month
WHEREAS,autism is a lifelong developmental disability, involving neurodevelopmental impairments, characterized by social deficits, communication difficulties and repetitive/restrictive behaviors and interests; and
WHEREAS, autism spectrum disorders occur in all racial, ethnic and socioeconomic groups and are five times more likely to occur in boys than girls; and
WHEREAS, according to data from 2014, the Center for Disease Control indicates that one in 68 children in the United States have an autism spectrum disorder; and
WHEREAS,while people diagnosed with autism share the common challenges, there is a broad spectrum of symptoms, skills and levels of impairment with autism spectrum disorders; and
WHEREAS,accurate, early diagnosis, resulting in appropriate interventions and education are vital to the future growth and development of the individual; and
WHEREAS, Lee County Autism Resource & Advocacy promotes and advocates for the general welfare of persons with autism spectrum disorders; and
WHEREAS,Lee County Autism Resource & Advocacy provides support, information and resources to families affected by autism spectrum disorders in the Lee County area; and
WHEREAS, Lee County Autism Resource & Advocacy remains committed to their cause and to educating families, professionals, and the general public to better understand this lifelong disability:
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Robert Bentley, Governor of the State of Alabama, do hereby proclaim April 2014, as
Autism Awareness Month
in the state of the Alabama and urge all citizens to educate themselves on this disability and to support those organizations striving to help the families of Lee County affect by this disorder.
