Spring Safety Day

WHEREAS, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDCP), seat belt use is the most effective way to save lives and reduce injuries in crashes, yet millions do not wear seat belts on every trip; and

WHEREAS, according to the CDCP, seat belts reduce serious injury and death in a crash by 50 percent; and

WHEREAS, Alabama is one of 31 states that has adopted a primary law for safety belt usage, meaning that seat belt tickets can be issued alone, as the primary reason for being pulled over by law enforcement; and

WHEREAS, according to the National Safety Council, teenagers are still the least likely group to use safety belts; and

WHEREAS, Wiregrass Body & Frame, Inc. and Enterprise High School holds Spring Safety Day to promote awareness for proper seatbelt use; and

WHEREAS, students arriving at Enterprise High School on Spring Safety Day wearing safety belts are given a shirt with the slogan “I Got Caught” to promote awareness for using safety belts:

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Robert Bentley, Governor of Alabama, do hereby proclaim May 14, 2014, as

Spring Safety Day

in the state of Alabama.
