Alabama Childhood Cancer Survivors Day

WHEREAS, childhood cancer remains the number one disease killer of children; and

WHEREAS, much progress has been made in treating and curing children with cancer; and

WHEREAS, in the prior 25 years, the childhood cancer survival rate has improved from less than 50 percent to now 80 percent; and

WHEREAS, the follow-up and care of childhood cancer survivors is an important component of pediatric cancer treatment; and

WHEREAS, researchers and physicians at the Alabama Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and Children’s of Alabama have made important contributions to the marked improvement of cures in children with cancer and are leaders in understanding and managing the challenges of childhood cancer survivors; and

WHEREAS, the courage and inspiration of Alabama’s Childhood cancer survivors will be celebrated on Sunday, June 8th, 2014, in Birmingham:

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Robert Bentley, Governor of the State of Alabama, do hereby proclaim June 8, 2014, as

Alabama Childhood Cancer Survivors Day

in the state of the Alabama and rededicate our efforts to finding a cure for all children with cancer in Alabama.
