National Caribbean American Heritage Month

WHEREAS, since 2005, the United States has recognized the millions of citizens who can trace their ancestry to the Caribbean and the contributions those individuals have made to the heritage and history of this great nation; and

WHEREAS, the state of Alabama is home to many individuals of diverse cultures, heritages and backgrounds, which make our city unique and endearing to all; and

WHEREAS, immigrants from Caribbean countries have journeyed to America for centuries; some came through the bondage of slavery, while others willfully left behind the world they knew in search of a better life; and

WHEREAS, the state of Alabama is grateful and takes pride in the contributions these individuals have made to the betterment of the state; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that we pause to celebrate the rich history and vibrant culture Caribbean Americans have brought to the state of Alabama:

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Robert Bentley, Governor of the State of Alabama, do hereby proclaim June 2014, as

National Caribbean American Heritage Month

in the State of the Alabama and urge all citizens to recognize the importance of the Caribbean heritage and culture.
