National Cancer Awareness Day

WHEREAS, The National Pink Tie Organization recognizes the first Saturday in August as National Cancer Awareness Day, a time for the entire nation to join together to battle all cancers, to raise awareness and to send the message that ending all cancers must be a national health priority; and

WHEREAS, National Cancer Awareness Day emphasizes the importance of prevention and early detection through health screenings, as well as the promotion of healthy lifestyles including proper diet, exercise and a smoke-free environment; and

WHEREAS, according to the American Cancer Society, cancer is the second most common cause of death in the United States, accounting for nearly one out of every four deaths in America; and

WHEREAS, National Cancer Awareness Day honors the memory of those we have lost, supports those who are still fighting cancer and celebrates the survivors who inspire us through their strength and courage:

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Robert Bentley, Governor of Alabama, do hereby proclaim August 4, 2014, as

National Cancer Awareness Day

in the state of Alabama.
