Proclamation
By the Governor of Alabama
WHEREAS, the office of Constable was introduced into the British Common Law following the Norman Conquest in 1066; and
WHEREAS, the Constable was the first law enforcement officer in the American Colonies; and
WHEREAS, the office of Constable has performed varied duties in different places in accordance with the needs of the constituency served; and
WHEREAS, the office of Constable is the most localized law enforcement agency in existence; and
WHEREAS, the Constable system in Alabama operates at no cost to state or county governments:
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Robert Bentley, Governor of Alabama, do hereby proclaim October 31, 2015, as
Constable Day
in the State of Alabama.
