Governor Bentley Honors Alabama’s 2016-2017 Teacher of the Year

MONTGOMERY – Governor Robert Bentley on Wednesday honored Alabama’s 2016-2017 newly selected Teacher of the Year Dana Jacobson at the monthly proclamation hour ceremony at the State Capitol.  Prior to the ceremony, the Governor met with Jacobson to discuss education issues and opportunities for Alabama.

“Teachers are an important resource in lives of students, and the Teacher of the Year honor is an excellent way Alabama can distinguish teachers who go above and beyond the calling to teach,” Governor Robert Bentley said. “I commend Dana Jacobson for all she has done in the lives of her students.  Her experience in the teaching field has extended beyond the classroom in a way that empowers students, other teachers and her community. I am honored to recognize her as Alabama’s 2016-2017 Teacher of the Year.”

Jacobson has taught at Clay-Chalkville High School in Pinson since 1999 in the areas of English, Debate, ACT Prep, Speech, Creative Writing and History of Film. She has also been involved in numerous community and extracurricular programs that have impacted the Clay-Chalkville area. As Teacher of the Year, Jacobson will travel around the state over the next school year to visit other school districts serving as a full-time ambassador for teachers and presenting education workshops.

“We are extremely proud of the accomplishments of our 2016-2017 Alabama Teacher of the Year Dana Jacobson,” Interim State Superintendent of Education Dr. Philip Cleveland said. “Her work over the years not only represents exemplary teaching but also demonstrates   advocacy for the community of learners she leads and inspires as an educator.”

With Jacobson’s selection as Alabama’s Teacher of the Year, she will be a candidate for the National Teacher of the Year.
