MONTGOMERY – Governor Robert Bentley on Friday announced the appointment of Mike Hill of Columbiana as the Superintendent of the State Banking Department. Hill replaces John D. Harrison who retired on Thursday after 11 years of service.

“I want to thank John for his dedication and commitment to the citizens of Alabama. His leadership in the areas of banking regulation and lending has provided stability to the industry and protected consumers while moving the Department forward,” Governor Bentley said.

Hill is a current member of the Alabama House of Representatives, serving Shelby County. Hill was elected in 1986. Hill received his B.S. Degree from Auburn University, attended the School of Banking of the South at Louisiana State University, and Commercial Lending School from the University of Oklahoma.

“For almost 30 years Mike has been instrumental in assisting with banking legislation while serving on several banking committees,” Governor Bentley said. “I am confident Mike will do a great job and I am honored to appoint him as the newest Superintendent of the State Banking Department.  Mike brings a wealth of knowledge that will continue to move the state forward in the area of consumer protection.”

“I am honored and excited to serve the people of Alabama as the Superintendent of the State Banking Department,” Mike Hill said. “Following in the steps of John Harrison, whose tenure was renowned across the country, carries great responsibility. I thank Governor Bentley for this appointment and his confidence that we can build on our strong community banking industry and ensure our banks meet the needs of the bright future for Alabama’s citizens.”

Hill served on the House of Representatives Banking and Insurance Committee (now the Financial Services Committee) for the past 30 years. During that time Hill handled most of the major banking legislation that was introduced and passed during that period including updates to banking regulations and other revisions.

“Serving the citizens of my district has been my distinct pleasure for nearly 30 years. My family and I have always been humbled by the confidence of the people of Shelby County. This new challenge is an opportunity to better the lives of all Alabamians, from Muscle Shoals to Dothan, from Fort Payne to Bayou Le Batre.”

Hill’s appointment is effective July 5, 2016.
