Governor Bentley Calls Special Election for House District 41

MONTGOMERY – Governor Robert Bentley on Wednesday announced the timeline for a special election to fill the vacant District 41 seat in the Alabama House of Representatives.

District 41 covers Shelby County.  The District 41 House seat was previously held by Representative Mike Hill. Hill of Columbiana was appointed as the Superintendent of the State Banking Department.

According to the special election timeline finalized Wednesday:

  • A Special Primary Election shall be held on Tuesday, October 18, 2016.  In the event that a Special Primary Election is not necessary, because the major parties each have only one candidate, the Special General Election shall be held on Tuesday, January 10, 2017.
  • A Special Primary Runoff Election shall be held on Tuesday, January 10, 2017, if necessitated by one candidate not receiving a majority of the votes cast in the Special Primary Election for either major party.
  • In the event that a Special Primary Runoff Election is not necessary, because one candidate receives a majority of the votes cast in the Special Primary Election for each major party, then a Special General Election shall be held on Tuesday, January 10, 2017.
  • In the event a Special Primary Runoff Election is required to be held, then the Special General Election shall be held on Tuesday, March 21, 2017.

All candidates qualifying with major political parties should be advised that the last day for any candidate to qualify with their respective parties, regarding such election, will be Monday, August 15, 2016, at 5:00 p.m.  The two major political parties shall certify their qualified candidates to the Secretary of State as soon as possible after the qualification deadline but by no later than 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 16, 2016.

All independent candidates and/or any minor parties seeking ballot access are advised that the deadline for filing of the appropriate notification, petitions, or supporting paperwork with the Secretary of State shall be Tuesday, October 18, 2016, at 5:00 p.m.
