Proclamation
By the Governor of Alabama
WHEREAS, the beef cattle business in Alabama is one of the state’s largest agricultural industries, representing a $2.5 billion industry; and
WHEREAS, cash receipts from the sale of cattle and calves in 2015 reached $480.8 million, which ranks second behind broilers among Alabama farm commodities; and
WHEREAS, Alabama’s 17,698 farms with cattle ranks 8th in the United States and on January 1, 2016 these farms had a total of 1.25 million head of cattle and calves; and
WHEREAS, the total value of cattle on Alabama farms last year was $1.68 million with a $1,380 value per head; and
WHEREAS, beef is a delicious, nutritious meat containing quantities of zinc, iron, protein, vitamins and minerals with the known slogan “BEEF: It’s What’s For Dinner;” and
WHEREAS, the beef industry is working hard to produce safe and wholesome products on our family farms across the state; and
WHEREAS, the 11,861 members of the Alabama Cattlemen’s Association, encourage the people of Alabama to enjoy beef during the month of October; and
WHEREAS, October has been proclaimed Beef Month since 1964;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Robert Bentley, Governor of Alabama, do hereby proclaim the month of October 2016, as
Beef Month
in the State of Alabama, and I urge all Alabamians to support the beef cattle industry and join with cattle producers in saluting this important industry.
