Republic of China (Taiwan) Day

Proclamation

By the Governor of Alabama

WHEREAS, Taiwan and the United States are longstanding allies who deeply cherish the common values of freedom, democracy, human rights, and the rule of law; and

WHEREAS, Taiwan is a major trading partner with Alabama. In 2014, Alabama imported $145.41 million products to Taiwan and exported $112.15 million products to Taiwan; and

WHEREAS, Taiwan serves the best interests of the Asia-Pacific Region in the continuation of stability and growth. On August 5, 2012, President Ma Ying-Jeou proposed the East China Sea Pacific Initiative calling upon the parties concerned to resolve all disputes peacefully and engage in a joint development of resources. Taiwan and Mainland China also signed the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA) in 2010; and

WHEREAS, U.S. businesses can collaborate with the initiative with innovative Taiwanese companies in Taiwan’s comprehensive protection of intellectual property rights and build on its relationship with Mainland China and other key Asian markets; and

WHEREAS, since 1983, Taiwan and Alabama have enjoyed long, cordial, and mutually beneficial relations. This friendship continues to strengthen in the passing years; and

WHEREAS, on October 10, 2016, the Republic of China (Taiwan) will celebrate its accomplishments on the Republic’s 105th Anniversary, the Double Ten Day; and

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Robert Bentley, Governor of Alabama, do hereby proclaim October 10, 2016, as

Republic of China (Taiwan) Day

in the State of Alabama.
