National Work Zone Awareness Week
Proclamation
By the Governor of Alabama
WHEREAS, National Work Zone Awareness Week was established December 15, 1999; and
WHEREAS, data shows within the 1,537 crashes in Highway Work Zones in 2016, there were approximately 14 fatalities and 645 injuries in Alabama; and
WHEREAS, work zone crashes and fatalities have decreased in Alabama and nationally since 2007; and
WHEREAS, nationally, 80 percent of people killed in work zones are drivers or passengers; and
WHEREAS, the primary reasons for work zone-related crashes include alcohol, speeding and distracted driving; and
WHEREAS, state agencies, road builders, contractors and local officials are joining together statewide to heighten awareness encouraging motorists to drive safely through work zones because drivers, passengers and highway workers all share the risk in work zones; and
WHEREAS, the 2017 campaign theme is “Work Zone Safety is in Your Hands”:
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Robert Bentley, Governor of Alabama, do hereby proclaim April 3rd through April 7th, 2017, as
National Work Zone Awareness Week
in the State of Alabama and encourage everyone to consider the safety of motorists and workers in work zones this week and every day.
